Things I’ve Eaten: Uncle Leong Seafood

[Edited 1 Jan 2014] Uncle Leong’s now has an outlet in Jurong East which is now one of my favourites, because it’s rarely crowded and quite well-ventilated although it’s in an open-air kopitiam.

Uncle Leong‘s is one of my favourite seafood restaurants. We first discovered it across the carpark from the fabled Mellben seafood – the same crab bee hoon goodness, but no 1.5 hour queue? SOLD.

They’ve moved out of Ang Mo Kio since then and now have an outlet in Toa Payoh and another in Punggol. My ‘makan gang’ friends prefer the Punggol outlet which is a proper restaurant with air-con, but I’m equally fine with the Toa Payoh one which is a zi-char joint in the midst of an industrial+residential area.

We celebrated Christina’s birthday at Uncle Leong’s Toa Payoh last week and I had a chance to try a few of the non-crab dishes.

Fried eggplant in salted egg yolk batter with pork floss. How do you possibly go wrong with salted egg batter? I'm coming back for more.

Sambal sliced fish. I didn't have any of this but apparently the sambal was pretty legit for a Chinese restaurant.

Shimmering sand crab. Like butter crab, but better. The butter gravy has quite a bit of kick from curry leaf and pepper seasonings.

And my favourite part, crab bee hoon. This is pretty much the same recipe as Mellben's so I don't know why anyone bothers queuing there.

It’s also great value – seven of us ate for $175 the other night.
(Disclaimer: although my husband’s surname is also Leong, the owners of this place are no relation; mentioning our names won’t get you any discounts…)

I can’t wait to try the crab bee hoon! My favourite one used to be near Holland Village but it has since closed down I think.
